Getting things cosy…
Getting things cosy…
Hana was building a tower. Red block, blue block, yellow block. Up, up, up!
"Hana!" called Mummy from the kitchen. "Time to tidy up, sweetheart. Dinner is nearly ready."
Hana looked at her tower. She didn't want to stop. Her eyebrows went down. Her lip went out.
"Hana?" Mummy called again, soft and kind.
Hana thought about Mummy. Mummy who made her porridge with honey. Mummy who kissed her knee when she fell down. Mummy who cuddled her every single night.
Hana took a big breath. "Coming, Mummy!" she called. "Coming, coming, coming!"
Clunk! went the red block, into the box. Clunk! went the blue block. Clunk, clunk, clunk! All the blocks went to sleep in their box.
Hana ran to the kitchen on quick little feet. "I tidied up, Mummy! All by myself!"
Mummy knelt down and opened her arms wide. Hana ran straight in.
"Oh Hana," said Mummy, hugging her close. "When you listen to me, my heart goes all warm. And do you know what? Allah is pleased too. Allah tells us to be kind to Mummy and Daddy."
Hana said Bismillah and ate her dinner. Yum, yum, yum. Then bath, then pyjamas, then one story and one kiss.
"Goodnight, my listening girl," whispered Mummy.
"Night night, Mummy," whispered Hana.
And Hana fell asleep with a warm heart. Listening to Mummy felt like a hug on the inside.
Listening to Mum and Dad is a way of loving them — and it pleases Allah too, because in the Quran He commands us to be good to our parents. Little ears that listen make homes full of warmth.
Because every little heart deserves a real answer.
Allah gave you your mummy and daddy to love you and look after you. Listening to them when they ask you to do good things — even when you'd rather keep playing — is your way of loving them back.
In the Quran, right after telling us to worship only Him, Allah tells us to be good to our parents — that's how important they are! When you listen, Mummy and Daddy are happy and Allah is pleased, all at the same time.
Tomorrow, when Mummy or Daddy calls you, try saying 'Coming!' with happy feet, just like Hana. See how warm your heart feels — like a hug on the inside.
وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا
“And your Lord has decreed that you worship not except Him, and to parents, good treatment.”
