Getting things cosy…
Getting things cosy…
Layla had a beautiful room, lots of toys, and a loving family. But Layla always wanted more. When she got a new dress, she wished it was a different colour. When Mum made her favourite meal, Layla grumbled that there wasn't enough.
"I wish I had what Fatima has," she would say about her neighbour. "She has a bigger house." Or, "I wish I had Sara's bike — mine is too old."
One evening, after Layla had spent the whole day complaining, her grandmother came to visit. Grandma Zahra was wise and gentle, with silver hair and warm, knowing eyes.
"Layla, habibti," Grandma Zahra said, pulling out an empty glass jar and a little bag of shiny golden paper stars. "I have a challenge for you."
"What kind of challenge?" Layla asked, curious despite herself.
"For thirty whole days, every time you notice something you're thankful for, say Alhamdulillah and put one star in this jar. It can be anything: a sunny day, a kind word, your mum's cooking, the sound of birds. Anything at all."
"That sounds too easy," Layla said with a shrug.
"Then it should be no trouble at all," said Grandma Zahra with a smile.
The first few days were hard. Layla was so used to noticing what she didn't have that she forgot to look for what she did. On the first night, she stared at the empty jar and huffed. Then she remembered the warm toast Mum had made for breakfast. "Alhamdulillah," she mumbled, and dropped in one lonely star.
But slowly, something changed. She noticed the way the morning light made her room glow golden. "Alhamdulillah." Star. She noticed her little brother's giggly laugh when she played with him. "Alhamdulillah." Star. She noticed the warmth of Mum's soup on a cold day. "Alhamdulillah." Star.
By the end of the first week, Layla was adding three or four stars a day. By the second week, she could barely keep up — the blessings were everywhere!
She noticed the cool breeze during her walk to school. The smile of her teacher when she answered correctly. The feeling of peace during prayer. The taste of cold water after playing outside. Even her old bike earned a star. It still whizzed down the hill by the park, with the wind in her face. "Alhamdulillah!" Layla laughed. Star!
By the thirtieth day, the jar was overflowing with golden stars. Layla held it up to the window, and the light made each star sparkle like real ones in the sky.
"Grandma, look!" said Layla, her eyes shining. "I never realised how much I have."
Grandma Zahra hugged her tightly. "Allah tells us in the Quran: 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you.' That means when we thank Him, He gives us even more of His blessings. And when we open our eyes to the gifts around us, we find we already have so much."
Layla kept her jar of stars on her bedside table. Every night, before she closed her eyes, she would think of one more gift from her day and whisper, "Alhamdulillah — all praise and thanks belong to Allah." Then she would snuggle down, warm and sleepy, beside her little jar of golden stars.
Shukr (gratitude) transforms how we see the world. When we count our blessings instead of our complaints, we discover that Allah's generosity surrounds us in every moment.
Because every little heart deserves a real answer.
Shukr means noticing your blessings and thanking the One who gave them. Alhamdulillah means 'all praise and thanks belong to Allah', and saying it is how we thank Him out loud. Layla didn't get a single new thing — her EYES changed, so she could spot the gifts that were there all along.
Allah makes a beautiful promise in the Quran: 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you.' That means when you are thankful, He blesses you with even more of His good gifts. A grateful heart is a happy heart — grumbling makes everything feel small, but Alhamdulillah makes everything feel golden.
Try Layla's challenge tonight: before you sleep, think of three 'stars' from your day — maybe something yummy, someone kind, something fun — and say Alhamdulillah for each one. Watch how quickly your own jar fills up.
